Abstract: The increasing global emphasis on natural, minimally processed nutritional supplements has renewed scientific interest in traditional plant-derived foods such as date palm present juice (also known as neera) and its concentrated product, gur. These foods are widely consumed across South Asia and the Middle East and are valued for their rich carbohydrate content, rapid digestibility, and micronutrient density. For athletes, who require sustained energy release, efficient glycogen replenishment, and antioxidant protection during intense training, identifying natural alternatives to commercial sports drinks is a growing priority. Date palm present juice offers a unique blend of simple sugars, minerals such as potassium and calcium, and bioactive compounds that contribute to hydration and muscle recovery. Gur, produced by thermal concentration of the juice, contains higher concentrations of sucrose, polyphenols, and essential minerals, making it a potential candidate for post-exercise recovery supplementation. Emerging nutritional analyses indicate that these products may provide metabolic advantages similar to or better than synthetic carbohydrate-electrolyte beverages. However, despite their traditional popularity, scientific evaluation of their benefits for athletic performance remains limited. This research seeks to examine the nutritional attributes of date palm present juice and gur and assess their potential as natural energy supplements for athletes. By evaluating their carbohydrate composition, glycemic characteristics, mineral content, and antioxidant profile, the research provides insights into their applicability for pre-exercise fueling, intra-workout energy maintenance, and post-workout recovery. The findings highlight the broader significance of integrating culturally rooted, nutrient-rich foods into modern sports nutrition frameworks. This paper contributes to bridging the knowledge gap by providing an evidence-based nutritional outlook that could inform athletes, sports dietitians, product developers, and policymakers seeking sustainable and health-enhancing alternatives to commercial energy supplements.
