Sports drinks vs sports confectionery in athletic performance

Sports drinks vs sports confectionery in athletic performance

Author(s): Naga Jyothi Ala and Maheshwar Mekam

Abstract:
A frequent nutritional strategy to improve athletic performance, especially in endurance and high-intensity activities, is the usage of sports drinks and sports confectionery. Although they both seek to provide quickly accessible carbohydrates and, occasionally, electrolytes or caffeine, their forms, rates of absorption, and real-world uses are very different. Sports drinks are perfect for maintaining fluid balance and thermoregulation during extended activity since they provide both hydration and energy replenishment. Sports confectionery, on the other hand, like energy gels and chews, offers concentrated carbohydrate dosages in portable forms that are appropriate for circumstances where fluid intake is limited or impossible.
It has been demonstrated that both improve performance by preserving blood glucose levels, delaying exhaustion, and improving cognitive function. Nevertheless, there are possible drawbacks to each, such as gastrointestinal issues, excessive sugar intake, and improper use outside of sports settings. This study compares the efficiency of sports drinks and sports confections in terms of hydration, energy replenishment, and overall effects on performance and recovery in order to analyse their function in athletic performance.
