Abstract: Introduction: This study explores the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), anxiety, depression, and stress among female All India Inter-University basketball players. Emotional intelligence, a critical psychological attribute in competitive sports, influences an athlete’s ability to manage emotions, enhance performance, and foster team dynamics. The study examines the psychological differences between strong and weak teams, assessing EI levels and mental health indicators such as anxiety, depression, and stress.Materials and Methods: Participants included athletes from two teams—one classified as strong and the other as weak who competed in the 2022 All India Inter-University Basketball Tournament. The study utilized the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) by Singh & Narain (2014) and the Anxiety Depression Stress Scale (ADSS) by Bhatnagar (2011) to measure EI and psychological distress. Statistical analyses, including Pearson correlation and t-tests, were employed to examine relationships between variables and compare group differences. Results: Findings revealed a significant difference in EI between the two teams, with stronger teams exhibiting higher EI scores (p =.036). However, no statistically significant difference was observed in anxiety, depression, or stress levels between the teams (p>.05). Correlation analysis indicated a negative association between EI and psychological distress, particularly within the weaker team, where a significant inverse correlation was found (p<.05).Conclusion: The study highlights the crucial role of emotional intelligence in competitive sports, suggesting that higher EI may contribute to enhanced resilience and psychological well-being among athletes. These findings underscore the need for integrating EI training in sports coaching to improve mental toughness and overall athletic performance. Future research should further explore the impact of psychological interventions aimed at enhancing EI and mitigating performance-related stress among elite athletes.
